Our History
A Legacy of Alpine Hospitality Since 1931
The Vision
Theodor Welschen envisions building a house on the 'Heji'. In his own words: 'Two years ago on a beautiful autumn day, when I was sitting on the small lift on the lookout, the Matterhorn inspired the thought that here and nowhere else is where happiness can be found!'

Breaking Ground
Theodor and his brother Basil begin construction. They complete the foundation pit through manual labor and build a hauling track to obtain sand from the riverbed for concrete work. By December 8, the ground floor is completed.
Craftsmanship
Theodor cuts wood from his own forest for the upper floors. The brothers split stone plates from local rock for the roof. Local craftsmen process the materials while the brothers handle the interior work.
Completion
The house is completed, and Theodor and Basil move in. It's one of the first residential buildings in the area, so remote that locals comment: 'You're crazy to build it that far away from the village!'

New Chapter
Theodor and his wife Clärli take over the Walliserhof, while Basil and his family occupy one apartment in the house.

Birth of Pension Welschen
As summer tourism grows in Zermatt, the house is converted into 'Pension Welschen', managed by Basil and his wife Julia. They offer full board to accommodate guests, including packed lunches for those spending the day in the mountains.
Next Generation
Basil and Julia build a small house above the pension and retire to 'House Julia'. Their daughter Ruth takes over the pension's management.
Modern Era Begins
The pension passes to their son Christian. Together with his wife Marlène, they completely restore the house.

Hotel Welschen
After building an additional annexe, the pension is transformed into the 'Hotel Welschen', now offering rooms with breakfast service.
Room Modernization
Major renovation project to rebuild and modernize most hotel rooms, enhancing comfort and amenities for guests.
Facility Expansion
Addition of a new breakfast room and installation of an elevator, improving guest comfort and accessibility. Construction of the Welschen Apartments 'Hörnligrat' begins.

Complete Transformation
Major redevelopment project to transform the hotel from 3-star to 4-star accommodation. The project includes a complete rebuild, expanding from 14 to 29 rooms, and adding new amenities including a pool and spa facilities.
